Mrs. Rita Mary Holt
October 2, 1913 - March 4, 2009

Richmond City Council does hereby celebrate the life; recognize the dedication; and, honor the service of Mrs. Rita Mary Holt.

Born in Wembley, England, Mrs. Holt served as a Red Cross nurse in London during World War II. In 1947, she married Lt. Edward Holt, a U.S. Army Air Force Intelligence Officer and, when he was recalled to active duty during the Korean War, the family was stationed in West Germany, England and the U.S. After he retired, they lived in London before moving to Baltimore, Maryland where their daughter, Annette Holt, joined them. While living there, Mrs. Holt began assisting her daughter's work on a pioneering inner-city ballet program by sewing costumes.

When the family moved to Richmond, Virginia in 1979, Mrs. Holt again assisted her daughter, who had been hired as a dance educator for a unique and soon-to-become award-winning, Richmond Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities Dance Program.

As a testament to her dedication to public service, Mrs. Rita Mary Holt generously donated thousands of hours of her time and talent over the next 20 years; registering students for classes; providing support to practices, recitals and performances at housing projects and community centers; and, sewing beautiful costumes for thousands of Richmond children.

Richmond City Council does therefore recognize, celebrate and remember the life, dedication and service of Mrs. Rita Mary Holt on behalf of all the children and families of Richmond and brings this to the attention of all our grateful citizens.

Given under my bond and presented this 10th day of March, two thousand nine, in the two hundred twenty-seventh year of the City of Richmond, in the two hundred thirty-third year of the Commonwealth of Virginia in the United States of America.

The Honorable Kathy Graziano
President, Richmond City Council
Councilwoman, Southwest 4th District
